Swallowing/Dysphagia Therapy

Why suffer in silence from a swallowing disorder?

Dysphagia (a fancy word for any type of swallowing disorder) can be a debilitating problem that leaves many people suffering in silence.

There are numerous causes for swallowing problems, including suffering a stroke or brain injury, cancer of the head and neck, and the aging process.

Ranging in severity from very mild to severe, dysphagia is an often-overlooked condition that can usually be remedied with the right speech therapist.

Speech therapy offers relief to many types of swallowing disorders.

If you are having any of the following symptoms, you are in the right place to reach out for help:

  • Painful or uncomfortable swallowing
  • Coughing when you eat or drink
  • Food feels like it is going down the wrong way
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Avoiding certain types of food or drink
  • Shortness of breath around mealtimes
  • Eyes are watering during or after a meal
  • Voice changes during a meal
  • Not able to eat any (NPO) or certain types of food by mouth
  • Feeling scared or anxious around food or drink

It starts with an assessment followed by treatment.

After an in-depth review of your previous medical records, I will sit down with you and evaluate your swallowing. I will ask detailed questions and watch you eat and drink various types of foods/liquids so that I can know which steps to take to help you regain your ability to swallow.

If you require a Modified Barium Swallow Study (MBSS) or Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES), I will set you up for one prior to moving forward in our treatment plan.

I am Vital-Stim certified and will be happy to discuss with you whether neuromuscular electrical stimulation (Vital-Stim) will help in your particular case.

Quit suffering and start enjoying your meals.

It is time for you to work with a Speech-Language Pathologist who completely understands you and how to treat your swallowing disorder.

Stop suffering in silence and start enjoying meals with your loved ones again!
